The classical Sultanabad and Ziegler workshops leaned on warm earth tones, but contemporary studios have figured out how to use indigo at very low concentrations to produce the soft sky and chalk blues that suit modern interior light. Three weavers in India spent close to seven months on the loom. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft. The blue was prepared from indigo leaf in cold baths, with the saturation kept deliberately low through controlled dipping time. The beige was left close to undyed wool, with walnut hull and madder picked out in the smaller floral incidents. The wool was air-cured between dye and wash to fix the pigment deep into the fibre.

The composition

A beige ground holds light blue floral tracery distributed across the field with no centred medallion. The colour values sit close, the blue reading as a quiet wash rather than as a bold accent. As the carpet ages the indigo will deepen and the beige will warm into bone, the contrast settling into a softer balance than the rug carries on the day it leaves the loom. The composition reads cool from a distance and reveals warmth on close approach.
