Square Ziegler carpets are unusual in the trade. The Ziegler tradition was developed for rectangular drawing rooms, and the floral repeat is built around a long axis. Translating the design to an eight-foot square requires the workshop to redraw the field so the floral repeat reads symmetrically on both axes, producing a centred composition rather than a directional one. The Ziegler Light Blue Beige square is a careful piece in this less common format.

Three weavers worked this 8' x 8' (244 x 244 cm) square in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted with the asymmetric knot at a traditional density. The vegetable-mordanted dyes were prepared in copper vats. After weaving the rug was sheared by hand, washed in a lustre bath, and the selvedge along all four sides was hand-finished.

The composition

A beige field carries an open floral repeat in muted rust, faded soft blue, and quiet sage, with a restrained border in cream and deeper beige. The discipline is the Ziegler one of restraint; the vines breathe rather than crowding the field. The square format gives the composition a centred reading; the eye finds the centre of the field and works outward rather than along an axis. Over the first decade the colours will gain the patina of hand-dyed wool.
