The composition is built around an open beige field. Everything else in the carpet works in service of it. A loose floral vine traverses the field at a measured spacing, a single border layer encloses without crowding, and the deeper accents in the vine work are calibrated so the field continues to read as the dominant element of the design. This is the Ziegler discipline that the original 1880s commissions established and that serious workshops still observe.

Three weavers shared the upright loom in northern India for around six months. The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied row by row at a steady cadence. The beige ground is the natural undyed wool, washed only enough to even the colour. The vine work draws on walnut hull, madder root, and a small quantity of indigo. Each dye lot was matured in copper for several weeks before the wool was lowered into the bath.

The composition

A beige field carries an open floral vine in soft walnut, muted madder, and a touch of indigo at the floral centres. The border is restrained, a single deeper guard framing the field rather than fencing it. The undyed beige holds a faint variegation that plant dye cannot replicate, the natural grading of the fleece itself. Over a decade of use the vine work will deepen and the beige will warm into a softer cream, with the carpet reading more unified each year of its life.

What you are buying

A Ziegler at 9' x 12' density and pattern discipline, sold through Western dealers or at international auction, sits between four and nine lakh equivalent. This new weaving carries the same fibre, dye lineage, and density at workshop pricing rather than collector pricing. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the defining property of serious hand knotted wool and the reason a piece like this enters a household and remains there across two and three generations.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a long drawing room arranged around a sectional sofa and a low table, or a formal dining setting seating ten to twelve. The beige field accepts almost any surrounding palette. Chalk and putty walls hold the warmth, walnut and oak joinery sit easily above, and brass and aged bronze read well against the muted vine work. A linen sofa in undyed cream sits comfortably without competing.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so window light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from outside the stain toward the centre. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
