Rugsville Zebra Ivory Black Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

The zebra hide entered Western interiors in the early twentieth century through the colonial drawing rooms of London and Paris. The graphic survives in textile because the irregularity of the stripes refuses to fall into a repeat. The eye reads the pattern as natural rather than designed.

The piece was tufted by hand across three to four months by Three weavers and a finisher. Loops of hand-spun wool were pulled through a stretched canvas and packed by hand to build the field, then the back was sealed in latex and finished with a cotton scrim. The final shearing pass relieves the pattern from the ground by exactly two millimetres, which is the depth that lets the geometry read at room scale rather than dissolving into surface noise.

The composition

The principal register of the composition is ivory and black. The figures of the design carry the secondary palette and the ground holds the principal colour without competition from the borders. Across the first year of use the surface will deepen in tone as the wool oxidises against ambient light, and the colour relationships in the field will tighten into the saturation the workshop intended. The composition reads as one settled gesture rather than a tile that repeats, which is the older and harder achievement in carpet design.

The piece in a room

At 8' x 10' the rug becomes the fundamental ground of a primary living room or a master bedroom. Furniture sits comfortably with all four legs on the rug, and the composition is read whole from across the room. The piece carries enough scale that walls can be kept neutral and the rug becomes the dominant colour decision in the room.

Care

Weekly suction-only vacuuming is enough for the surface. Address spills immediately with a clean dry cloth; if needed, follow with a slightly damp one and a drop of mild detergent. Light shedding clears in four to six weeks. Send the piece for professional dry cleaning at two-year intervals to keep the wool finish and the latex backing in good condition.
