Ivory and brown is the most architectural of the modern abstract palettes. Without colour heat to drive the composition, the drawing relies on tonal shift, fibre contrast, and the way silk reads against wool under different light. The Tibetan-influenced abstract tradition has worked in this register since the 1980s, when New York gallery weavers began commissioning hand-knotted pieces from Indian and Nepali workshops to put on the floors of architect-designed lofts and minimalist apartments.
The loom carried three weavers across approximately six months. Knots were tied in the Persian asymmetric draw against a paper cartoon hung above the warp, paced row by row to the density a wool-silk blend requires. The wool is hand-spun from highland fleece, washed cold to retain lanolin. The silk is reeled and double-plied for body. The brown tones come from walnut hull and oak gall, the ivory and bone from undyed cream-coloured fleece. Cotton warp and weft, beaten tight at the close of each line.
The composition
An ivory field with brown abstract drawing moving across the surface in irregular rather than centralised composition. The silk passages catch light at angles where the wool stays matte, producing a tonal play that shifts across the day. There is no border, no medallion, no symmetry. The drawing reads as a single considered field. Over years the brown will deepen, the ivory will warm slightly, and the silk will gain the patina that hand-spun reeled silk acquires when it is walked on rather than displayed.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted wool-and-silk modernist carpets at 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) appear at design galleries in the thirty-to-sixty-thousand-dollar range when comparable density and silk content are matched. This is a current weaving on the same construction principles, made to be used. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, in the way wool-silk pieces have done since the tradition began. The price reflects materials and weaver-months at present production cost.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) suits a living area in a serious flat or a primary bedroom in a larger one. The ivory-and-brown palette pairs with white-painted walls, lime plaster, raw concrete, and pale wood. It accepts both modernist furniture in walnut and steel and traditional upholstery in linen, oatmeal, and tobacco leather. The neutral palette makes it the rug to install in a room where the art and the architecture are doing the colour work.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet twice a year so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted, particularly across the silk passages. Blot any spill immediately with a clean white cotton cloth, never coloured, working from the perimeter of the spot inward. Engage a conservator every four to six years for a hand wash using plant-soap chemistry. Maintained well, the carpet runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
