The Walhalla pattern draws on a quieter strain of European transitional design, where the borrowed architecture of a Persian medallion meets the restraint of mid-century interiors. Beige carries the field. The figure stays low against the ground, drawn in tones that read as ornament rather than as primary motif. The result is a rug built to live in a room for a decade without asking for attention, the kind of piece that improves the air of a space without ever announcing itself.

Two weavers shared the loom for roughly four months. About 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied row by row against the cotton warp, each pass packed into place with a wooden comb. The pile is hand-spun wool, yarn-dyed in the skein before the warp was strung, then luster washed at the end of weaving so the surface relaxes into its settled tone. The beige is drawn from a mid-warm undyed fleece, chosen because it deepens with use rather than fading.

The composition

A wide beige ground with the figure drawn in two close tones, the medallion suggested rather than asserted, the corner work running soft into the border. The drawing is held narrow throughout, line widths kept restrained so the eye reads texture before it reads pattern. The colour will continue to settle for the first two years. The beige will warm slightly, the figure will deepen by perhaps a quarter tone, and the rug will reach the tonal balance it was built for around year three.

What you are buying

Antique European transitional carpets of comparable scale and condition trade through Sotheby's, Bonhams, and specialist Western dealers at three to five times this asking price when they appear in clean state. This is a contemporary weaving in the same idiom, hand-knotted on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, finished entirely by hand. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property that distinguishes a hand-knotted piece from any other floor covering at the price.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) suits a primary bedroom positioned under the foot of the bed, or a sitting area arranged around a pair of upholstered chairs. The beige palette pairs with linen, oak, walnut, brass, and unframed art on paper or canvas. It holds against lime-washed walls in any pale tone and against deeper plaster greys. It works in a child's room without forcing the colour scheme around it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months so foot traffic and light age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years to lift embedded soil. The rug runs sixty to eighty years with this routine and outlasts most of the furniture around it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
