Heriz Serapi carpets came out of north-west Persia in the late nineteenth century, distinguished from softer city work by a robust angular geometry: large stepped medallions, broad cornerpieces, and a structural confidence that made them the preferred floor of American Gilded Age dining rooms. The Serapi designation, applied retroactively by Western dealers, referred to the highest-quality Heriz weavings of the 1880-1910 period. Round Heriz pieces are vanishingly rare in the historical record because the angular medallion was conceived for rectangular formats. Adapting it to an 8-foot circle requires a redrawing.
This 8' round (244 cm diameter) navy piece was woven by three weavers over six months on a custom circular loom. The geometry of weaving in a circle means each row is a different length, and the angular Heriz medallion has to be reinterpreted so it resolves cleanly at every radius. New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, with vegetable dyes prepared in the traditional way over a season of slow vat work.
The composition
A deep saturated navy ground that reads as midnight in low light and clarifies into ink-blue in direct sun. A central stepped medallion in faded ivory and oxidised rust, framed by cornerpieces resolved into the curve of the rim. The Serapi palette holds: indigo, madder rust, ochre, and bone white. As the carpet ages, the navy deepens further and the ivory medallion warms into cream.
What you are buying
Vintage round Heriz Serapis are an auction rarity; when they appear at Skinner or Rippon Boswell they sit between $4,500 and $9,000 because round formats command a premium for the additional cartoon work and loom complexity. The retail MSRP here aligns with that benchmark. Hand-knotted vegetable-dyed wool of this calibre gains depth with use as the lanolin migrates and the dyes mature.
The piece in a room
An 8-foot round carpet is for octagonal entry halls, central rotundas under chandeliers, round dining rooms with a circular table for six, and turret studies. It anchors a circular table without competing with it. The navy ground works against pale walls, plaster white or warm bone, and pairs with walnut, brass, and oiled leather. Place it on bare hardwood so the curve reads cleanly against the floorboards.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each season so the wear pattern does not concentrate where chair legs sit. Vacuum weekly, suction only. The rim of a round rug needs annual inspection because there is no straight selvedge to absorb edge wear. A specialist hand wash every five to six years will lift the dust embedded in the deep navy ground.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
