The vintage patchwork tradition takes the salvage logic of village textile work and elevates it into a deliberate gallery format. Older Anatolian and central Asian rugs that have lost their original utility are sourced, cropped, washed, over-dyed, and reassembled as new compositions. Red as the over-dye colour pulls every fragment toward the warm end of the spectrum and creates a unified field that nonetheless contains the structural memory of every source piece in it.
This 6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) hand-knotted piece took close to four months in India. Sourced fragment material was carded and re-knotted onto a new cotton foundation rather than simply joined, which is the structural distinction between this rug and a stitched patchwork. Two weavers worked the loom; the dyeing and over-dyeing stages added another month of preparation. Red was built across multiple immersions in copper vats to give the colour the saturation depth that a single dye bath cannot.
The composition
A unified red field at three or four saturation values, with the underlying motifs of the source fragments ghosting through where the over-dye registers thinner. The red sits closer to madder than crimson, which is why it works against warm wood and brass without becoming a Christmas colour. The composition has no centre and no border, which is the defining gesture of the patchwork format applied to hand-knotting.
What you are buying
Vintage-tradition over-dyed hand-knotted rugs at this scale and density list at established Western dealers at $4,000 to $9,000. The Rs 2.91 lac MSRP places this rug at fair gallery parity. Hand-knotted construction extends the working life of the piece well beyond a stitched patchwork, and the over-dye continues to settle and deepen for several years. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living area, or a dining setup for a four-seater. Red grounds work hardest against neutral walls in plaster, lime, or warm putty; the rug then reads as the chromatic event of the room and pulls the rest of the architecture into supporting position. Pair with brass, walnut, leather, and warm linen.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug each season for even ageing. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton; never rub. Schedule a conservator hand-wash within the first year to settle the over-dye, then every five years thereafter. The piece is built for sixty to eighty years of working life under this regime.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
