Rugsville Vintage Patchwork Overdyed Purple Wool Carpet 7' x 9''

Hand-spun village wool absorbs overdye in a way that machine-spun yarn never matches. The lanolin still in the fibre resists the new pigment for a fraction longer than a clean cotton or synthetic would. The result is a slow, layered uptake that produces the gentle tonal variegation that defines a serious patchwork. This 7' x 9' (213 x 274 cm) purple version is built almost entirely from older village fibres that have already been broken in by use before they were ever cut for assembly.

Two to three weavers worked the rug across roughly three and a half months. The constituent panels were drawn from older carpets in the wool belt that runs through eastern Turkey into the southern Caucasus. After the panels were trimmed to a uniform pile and scoured of their original surface colour, the wool was immersed in a single purple bath, drawn out, dried, and assembled by hand with cotton thread. A fresh cotton foundation was added behind the patchwork and the whole rug was warm-washed to settle the surface.

The composition

The dominant register is a single deep purple field. Underneath, the original drawings of the source rugs continue to assert themselves. A medallion fragment, a section of stylised border, a corner of an old prayer arch. The eye picks them up at six feet and loses them at twelve. The seams between fragments make a soft architectural grid that gives the rug its overall structure. The colour will deepen over the first year of use as the dye settles and ambient light works on it.

Each patchwork is by definition a unique object because the fragments behind it are. The supply of suitable old village wool is finite and shrinking. Hand-knotted wool maintained reasonably appreciates rather than depreciates.

The piece in a room

7' x 9' (213 x 274 cm) is the slightly more compact reading of the conventional living-room scale. It anchors a sofa-and-two-chairs grouping where 8' x 10' would be tight to the walls. The purple ground takes brass and walnut warmly. It pairs with both pale and saturated wall colours. Try it under a low slung sofa in cream linen against a charcoal wall for the most considered effect.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only. Beater bars are too aggressive for hand-knotted wool of this age range. Rotate twice yearly so light wear stays even across the surface. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Engage a wool conservator for a hand wash every seven years to restore lanolin and refresh the dye.
