Rugsville Vintage Patchwork Overdyed Purple Wool Carpet 7' x 10'

About two million hand-tied knots underpin the surface of a 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) overdyed patchwork. The number is the easy part. The harder part is that each panel within the rug is the work of a different loom, sometimes a different decade, sometimes a different region of the wool belt that runs from the Anatolian plateau into the southern Caucasus. The patchwork brings those panels into one composition and the overdye brings them into one colour. Purple is a register that older village rugs almost never reached on their own.

The labour for this rug runs to roughly four months across two or three weavers, working primarily on the assembly, reinforcement, and reknotting of stressed seams. Older fragments were trimmed to a uniform pile, scoured, and lowered into a regulated purple bath designed to deliver a true plum rather than a thin lavender. The panels were then joined by hand with cotton thread, supported with a fresh cotton foundation, and warm-washed to even the surface and bring out the underlying lanolin glow of older wool.

The composition

Twelve feet from the rug the eye reads a single deep purple plane. Six feet in, the underlying drawings start to resolve. Stylised botanical motifs from one panel, geometric medallion fragments from another, sections of border guard running across the field at unexpected angles. The seams form a soft architectural grid that organises the whole composition. Tonal shifts between panels are not a defect. They are the way the technique announces itself.

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged or, better, with suction only. Rotate the rug a half turn every six months so light and traffic age the surface evenly. Blot spills with white cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every seven years. Avoid chemical spot cleaners which destroy the lanolin and lift the dye unevenly.
