Purple in the overdye spectrum is a relatively recent achievement. The colour requires synthetic dye chemistry mature enough to push wool past blue without falling into red, and it took workshops most of the late 1990s to lock the bath process down. When the colour is held correctly it sits as a deep aubergine with violet warming through it under direct light. This rug is built around that more difficult and more recent end of the overdye palette, and the depth of the field reflects the discipline behind the bath.
The piece took roughly three and a half months for a team of two to three weavers. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton warp using the symmetric knot at standard pile density. The carpet was sliced into rectangular tiles along the warp grain, restitched into a single field, and lowered into a violet-purple aniline bath where the immersion was held until the saturation reached display level. Final shearing brought the pile to eight millimetres so the seam grid is part of the visible composition.
The composition
A field of saturated purple varying from aubergine in some panels to violet in others, with under-imagery from the parent rugs reading through as faint atmospheric variation: traces of old red, faded gold, oxidised cream, soft indigo. The colour is intentionally not flat. Each panel breathes slightly differently, which gives the surface its painterly quality. Direct sunlight intensifies the violet; cooler interior light pulls the field deeper toward aubergine.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted overdyed wool patchworks at this scale list with European and American dealers in the 1,700 to 2,800 GBP band. The price here is 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, which represents workshop direct pricing rather than reseller economics. The wool predates the overdye by two to four decades, which means the structure has already passed through its initial settling and the rug arrives with patina rather than freshly woven stiffness.
The piece in a room
7' x 9' (213 x 274 cm) anchors a bedroom under a king platform with bedside symmetry, or sits as the centre piece of a living room with two facing sofas. Saturated purple holds against bone walls, plaster, soft grey, and chalk white; it pairs with walnut, blackened oak, brass, and bronze. Linen and leather both work as upholstery companions. Keep the rest of the room quiet; the field is doing the chromatic work.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Address spills by blotting a clean cotton cloth flat against the pile. Schedule a wool-conservator hand-wash every five years. With this protocol the rug runs sixty to seventy years under daily household traffic and the violet will continue to deepen rather than fading.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
