The acid lifts old colour at a controlled rate, which is what keeps the under-pattern visible as faint figuration rather than burning it away. Final shearing brings the pile down to about eight millimetres so the seam grid reads as part of the composition.

The composition

A field of saturated orange shading from rust to burnt cantaloupe across the panels, with under-imagery in cream, faded indigo, and old gold coming through the wash. The seams sit as a regular grid of twelve to sixteen tiles, depending on how the panels were arrayed. Sunlight warms the orange toward red; cooler interior light settles it toward apricot. The rug does not present as one flat colour; it reads as a layered surface where every panel tells a slightly different story under the same skin.
