Rugsville Vintage Patchwork Overdyed Multi Wool Carpet 7' x 11'

Patchwork overdyes in the multi-colour register represent the most original reading of the category. Each section retains a different colour bath, and the field becomes a mosaic of saturated tones held together by the underlying construction of the recovered wool. The cumulative effect reads as a graphic statement that no single-colour overdye can produce, and as a record of many earlier carpets repurposed into a contemporary composition.

Older hand-knotted wool sections were sourced, sheared, and prepared for individual dye treatment. Two artisans worked the dye phase over close to four months, lowering each piece into a different colour bath. A finisher stitched the patches together on a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field built from blocks of bright pink, deep blue, sun yellow, sage green, faded turquoise, and a warm tomato red, arranged without symmetry. Underlying carpet patterns ghost through within each block. Each section carries the variation of its individual dye lot. The whole composition reads as a graphic mosaic rather than a unified colour field, and the rug expects to be the visual focal point of any room it sits in.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth pressed against the pile. Avoid bleach and strong alkaline cleaners. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years.
