The multicolour overdye is the format taken to its expressive limit. Instead of unifying the field under a single tonal wash, the workshop preserves a range of colours across the panels, with each tile carrying its own dominant hue and the seams functioning as architectural transitions between them. The result is closer to a gallery wall than to a traditional carpet, and the technique is the most demanding in the overdye family because every panel has to hold its register against its neighbours without the surface descending into noise.

The rug took close to four months for three weavers working at adjacent looms. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation at standard density using the symmetric knot. The completed carpet was cut into rectangular tiles, sorted by under-colour, then sent through individual dye baths in red, blue, green, ochre, terracotta, ivory, and aubergine. The dyed panels were assembled into a final composition, hand-stitched along the grain, sheared to eight millimetres, and dressed. No two panels read the same colour.

The composition

A grid of multicolour panels: deep red beside cool blue, ochre beside aubergine, forest green beside ivory and terracotta. Each tile carries the residual under-imagery from its parent carpet, which means the overall surface reads as a mosaic of carpet histories rather than a unified field. The seams introduce a steady architectural rhythm across the array. From distance the rug presents as graphic colour blocking; on approach it reveals as a layered archive of motif fragments.

What you are buying

Multicolour patchwork overdyes are the most labour-intensive variant in the category. Dealers in Western markets list comparable pieces at 2,000 to 3,200 GBP at this size. Here the rug is offered at 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, which reflects the discipline of an Indian workshop producing direct rather than the markup of import retail. The wool is itself decades old before the overdye, which gives the rug authentic patina from the first day of use.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or fits a six-seat dining table. Multicolour fields want quiet walls and quiet upholstery; bone, plaster, off-white, soft grey, oak panelling. The rug is doing the chromatic and graphic work for the whole room. Pair with a single strong piece of art at most. Walnut, blackened steel, brass, and leather all hold against the field without competing.

Conservation

Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed flat. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand-wash every five years. The rug is built to run seventy years and the multicolour panels will continue to settle into a more harmonious composition across that span as light slowly equalises the saturations.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
