Patchwork rug-making began in the Anatolian villages of central Turkey, where weavers cut sections from worn antique carpets and stitched them back together to extend useful life. The technique migrated into design when European decorators saw that the resulting piece carried a graphic energy no single weaving could produce. A patchwork is a found composition, a deliberate collage of unrelated drawings forced into one rectangle. This rug refines that idea further by taking the assembled patches through a single grey overdye bath that pulls the whole field into a unified tonal statement.

The rug was constructed in India over approximately five to six months. Two to three workers cut and matched roughly forty hand-knotted wool patches, each one originally part of a different woven carpet, and joined them along ridge seams with hand-stitched reinforcement. The reassembled surface was then washed in chemical reduction to soften original colour, and submerged in a grey overdye vat for full immersion. The seams remain visible as a faint grid; the original drawings survive as ghost outlines beneath the unified grey.

The composition

A field of soft grey resolved into roughly forty rectangular sections, each section carrying its own faint pattern beneath the overdye. Some patches show the ghost of a medallion, others a floral repeat, others a geometric border. The seams between patches read as faint stitched lines rather than as harsh divisions. The overall effect is of a single grey carpet that has been gently faded by time, with the past visible just below the surface.

Avoid placing it under furniture with strongly competing graphic pattern; the patchwork is already doing graphic work.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged and check the seams gently every six months for any thread looseness; minor restitching is straightforward. Rotate end for end twice yearly to balance light and traffic. Blot spills with cotton, working from the edge of the spill inward. Engage a specialist conservator for a full hand wash every five years.
