Rugsville Vintage Patchwork Overdyed Gray Wool Carpet 6' x 8'

Grey is the most recent addition to the over-dye colour family and arguably the most flexible. A grey over-dye on a patchwork field produces a result that sits between the cool of the indigo and the warm of the charcoal, a neutral dark field that pairs with cool and warm walls equally. The Vintage Patchwork Gray works in this neutral register; multiple panels of older woven wool joined into a 6' x 8' field and over-dyed in a hand-mixed grey bath.

Two to three weavers worked this 6' x 8' (183 x 244 cm) piece in India over around four to five months. The panels are hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, sourced from older woven material. After the patchwork was joined and reinforced, the rug went through an antique wash, was sheared close to the foundation, and then immersed in a hand-mixed grey over-dye bath in copper vessels.

The composition

The patchwork grid is irregular; the grey over-dye unifies the field into a single mid-grey reading at viewing distance, with the underlying panel boundaries and original colour life visible as tonal incident on approach. The grey is built from iron-mordanted indigo over a base mordant, which gives it depth without coolness. Over the first decade the grey will hold its tonal range; the wool will gain lustre with foot traffic.

Conservation
