The completed surface was washed in chemical reduction to soften the original colours, then submerged in a single grey dye vat for full immersion overdyeing. The patch grid remains visible as a faint stitched mesh, and the original drawings survive as paler outlines under the unified grey.

The composition

A continuous grey field with the slight tonal drift that full immersion overdyeing produces, lighter at the edges where the dye saturated less, deeper in the body. Original floral, geometric, and medallion patterns survive as ghost outlines under the grey, providing incident on close inspection while never claiming the eye from a distance. The seam lines run faintly across the rug. The work reads as a single considered grey object, with embedded textile history visible to anyone who looks.
