Complete your setup
Grey is the most architectural of overdye outcomes. It comes from sending old wool through a bath that strips colour rather than adding it, leaving the carpet sitting somewhere between charcoal and stone with the under-imagery from the parent rugs reading as low whisper across the field. The technique was developed by workshops in Anatolia and exported into Indian production through the 2000s, where the format settled into a recognisable category. This rug is part of that quieter, more architectural register of the overdye family.
About three months of work for two to three weavers. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at standard density using the symmetric knot. The completed rug was cut into rectangular panels along the grain, hand-stitched back together, then lowered into a desaturating bath that lifted the original colour and replaced it with a graphite-grey wash. The pile was sheared to eight millimetres before final dressing. The patches retain their seams as part of the visible architecture.
The composition
A field of cool grey, varying from charcoal in some panels toward dove and stone in others. Faint imagery from the source carpets, an occasional medallion edge, an old border fragment, breathes underneath as low-contrast under-pattern. Some panels read flat, some carry the ghost of a floral repeat. The colour is intentionally subdued, which is the point: the rug functions as a considered architectural ground rather than as a chromatic event. Daylight cools the field toward steel; lamp light warms it toward warm graphite.
What you are buying
Comparable hand-knotted overdyed wool patchworks at this size list with European dealers at 1,500 to 2,300 GBP. The price here, 64,699 against an MSRP of 2,58,720, runs well below that band. Hand-knotted wool of this construction holds its structural integrity for seventy years and continues to look better the longer it sits in a working room, which is the property no other floor object carries at this price.
The piece in a room
6' x 8' (183 x 244 cm) is the right scale for a home office, a primary bedroom under a queen, a media room, or a corner sitting area. Grey of this register pairs with everything: bone, white, black, walnut, oak, brass, blackened steel, leather, linen. It functions as a neutral with character rather than a true neutral, and it reads especially well in rooms that already have one strong colour or one strong piece of art that the rug is supporting rather than competing with.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills with a flat cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a wool-conservator hand-wash every five to seven years. The rug is engineered to run sixty to seventy years and the grey will hold its register across that span without significant fade.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
