Charcoal is the patchwork colour that does the most work in a contemporary room. It sits between the pure black of a graphic rug and the soft gray of an architectural one, holding both registers without committing to either. The technique behind the rug is straightforward in description and laborious in execution. Older village carpets are sourced, sectioned, scoured of their original colours, dyed in a single controlled bath, reassembled, and finished. The charcoal version is the most disciplined reading of the patchwork canon.
The labour count for this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece runs to two or three weavers across four months. After the underlying fragments were trimmed and washed, the wool was lowered into a black-iron bath calibrated to drop a true charcoal rather than a flat black. The patches were stitched by hand into the new format, supported by a fresh cotton foundation at the back, then warm-washed to soften the wool and even the surface. Stress points along the original seams were knotted again to make the new whole structurally sound.
The composition
The drawings of the original village rugs read through the charcoal as soft tonal shifts rather than as pictures. A medallion fragment in one panel, a section of stepped border in another, a fragment of a stylised botanical here and there. From four feet the rug behaves as a tonal architectural plane. From six inches it operates as a layered drawing. Black walls absorb the rug. Lime-washed walls throw it forward as the major event of the floor.
What you are buying
Comparable patchwork rugs at Western dealers run from $5,000 to $9,500 depending on size and provenance. This rug clears at ₹94,399 against a list of ₹3,77,300 because the category itself sits in a long structural clearance. Each rug is unrepeatable. The underlying fragments cannot be sourced twice. Hand-knotted wool of this make-up appreciates as the contemporary dye sets and the wool develops patina, rather than depreciating like a manufactured surface.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) is the right scale for a primary living group, a six-seater dining floor, or a long study. The charcoal works in two opposing modes. Against pale upholstery and bone walls it sits as a graphic anchor. Against navy, burgundy, or oxblood it dissolves into a softer architectural ground that lets the upholstery lead. Brass and burnished bronze read beautifully into the surface.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly using suction only. Switch off any beater bar before it ever touches the pile. Rotate the rug a half turn every six months so daylight and traffic move evenly across the surface. Blot any spill with a clean white cotton cloth, never scrub. A wool conservator should be engaged for hand wash every seven or eight years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
