Indigo dye predates almost every other blue used in textiles. The pigment was extracted from Indigofera tinctoria across the Indian subcontinent for over two thousand years before it became a commodity in the Atlantic trade, and the deep cool blue it produces has the unique property of oxidising on the fibre rather than penetrating it, which is why indigo-dyed work always reads with a slight surface life. A blue overdyed rug carries some of that quality even when synthetic blues are involved, because the saturated bath sits on top of the existing pattern rather than replacing it.

This rug was assembled in India over approximately five to six months by two to three workers. About forty hand-knotted wool patches, cut from previously woven carpets of varying patterns, were matched by pile height and density and stitched along reinforced seams. The completed surface was washed in mild reduction, then submerged in a single full-immersion blue dye vat. The patch grid survives as faint stitched lines across the field, and the original floral and geometric drawings show through as paler outlines under the unified blue.

The composition

A field of deep blue that varies subtly across the rug because no two patches absorbed the dye at exactly the same rate. Some sections read as ink, others as denim, others as a softer faded sky-blue. The seam lines form a faint rectangular grid. Beneath the blue, the ghost outlines of forty different original drawings remain partly visible. The rug operates as a single tonal field at distance and as a collage of layered incidents on close inspection.

What you are buying

Comparable overdyed patchwork rugs trade in European and US showrooms at three to four times this price. You are buying it directly at production cost from the country where the patches were originally woven and reassembled. Hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, fully overdyed. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the patchwork construction provides resilience against any localised wear.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area or a generous master bedroom. The deep blue field sits beautifully against ivory or pale grey walls, brass and copper accents, and dark walnut or oak furniture. It pairs with leather seating in cognac, oxblood, or chocolate. Avoid bright competing pattern in upholstery; the rug should be the principal graphic element. Strong natural light deepens the blue rather than fading it.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly using suction only. Rotate end for end every six months. Inspect the seams twice a year and address looseness with hand stitching before it propagates. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool-trained cleaner every five years. The blue dye will shift slightly toward a softer tone over a decade of indoor use, which is desirable rather than a defect.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
