Indigo as a wash colour belongs to the oldest dye chemistry in the textile record. The pigment is built up across multiple immersions because each individual bath only deposits a thin layer; the depth comes from repetition. An indigo over-dye applied to a patchwork field produces a blue field that reads at three or four saturation values simultaneously, depending on how long each fragment was held in the vat and how readily it accepted the pigment.

This 6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) hand-knotted piece took roughly four months in India. Two weavers worked the loom; the wool was sourced from carded fragments and re-knotted onto a new cotton foundation. The indigo dyeing added another month of preparation, with the wool lifted in and out of copper vats over multiple immersions to build the saturation. The labour total runs to nine weaver-months when dye preparation is included.

The composition

Blue at varying depths, the saturation building toward the centre and softening at the perimeter, with the structural memory of the source fragments ghosting through in passages where the over-dye registers thin. The blue sits between Mediterranean ultramarine and traditional indigo, which is why it works against both white plaster walls in a modern setting and richer wall colours in a more traditional plan. There is no centre, no border, no repeat motif.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted vintage-tradition over-dye blues at this scale list at international dealers at $4,000 to $9,000. The Rs 1.72 lac MSRP places this rug at fair gallery parity for the new market. Indigo dye is the most stable of the natural pigments and the colour will deepen with use rather than fading. The piece appreciates with use; tufted equivalents do not.

The piece in a room

6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living area, or a dining setup for four. Blue grounds work hardest against bone, plaster, and warm putty walls; pair with brass, walnut, leather, oak, and natural linen. Cool greys reinforce the temperature; warm wood floors balance it. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to be the chromatic event.

Conservation

Half-turn each season. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Conservator hand-wash within the first year to settle the over-dye, then every five years thereafter. Indigo deepens with light; the rug benefits from natural sunlight in moderation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
