An overdyed patchwork is a workshop solution to a structural question: what to do with old hand-knotted wool that has too much life left to discard but too much wear to sell as is. The answer worked out across the 1990s and 2000s in Anatolian and Indian workshops was to cut, restitch, and re-bathe. The fragments are joined into a new field, the field is overdyed under a single tonal wash, and the resulting rug carries the structural memory of multiple parent carpets beneath one unified colour. This piece sits inside that practice.

The carpet was rebuilt over roughly three months by a team of two to three weavers. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation at standard density, then sliced into rectangular panels along the warp grain, hand-stitched back together, and lowered into a deep blue aniline bath where the temperature was held just below boiling for several hours. Final shearing brought the pile to eight millimetres so the seams contribute to the geometry. The blue settled into the wool unevenly, which is what gives the surface its variegated quality.

The composition

A blue field carrying low-contrast under-imagery in cream, faded madder, oxidised gold, and pale olive. The blue ranges across the surface from inky navy in some tiles to a cleaner cobalt in others, and the variation is visual evidence that each panel began as part of a different parent rug. The seams form a regular grid; the colour modulation across panels does not. Daylight cools the field; warm interior light pushes it toward Prussian blue.

What you are buying

European and American dealers list hand-knotted overdyed patchworks at this size in the 1,500 to 2,400 GBP band. Here the listing is 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, which reflects workshop direct pricing without retail or import overhead. The wool inside the rug is already aged; the structural lanolin has stabilised, the wool has dropped its initial shed, and the colour will continue to develop rather than fade.

The piece in a room

6' x 8' (183 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a study, a primary bedroom under a queen platform, or a sitting nook with two armchairs. Deep blue holds against bone walls, plaster, soft grey, and pale sage. It carries brass, bronze, and linen well, and reads particularly well in rooms with good north light where the cool register of the colour is rewarded. Avoid placing under furniture that already carries strong pattern.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum suction-only, no beater bar contact, on a weekly cycle. Blot any spills downward with a clean cotton cloth and weight the cloth with a book until the area is dry. Send to a wool-trained conservator every five years for a deep hand-wash. Under this protocol the rug runs seventy years and ages into a deeper, calmer blue rather than dulling.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
