Wool was sourced from carded fragment material and re-knotted onto a new cotton foundation with the asymmetric Persian knot, which is the structural distinction between this rug and a stitched patchwork. The black over-dye was applied across multiple immersions in iron-mordanted dye baths to achieve the saturation depth that single-bath dyeing cannot. Total labour runs to roughly nine weaver-months including dye preparation.

The composition

A near-uniform black field at the room scale that resolves on close approach into individual fragments at slightly different saturations. Underlying motifs from the source rugs ghost through the over-dye in passages where the original pile was short or the original colour assertive enough to survive the wash. The black is forgiving of dust and traffic in a way lighter rugs are not, and the structural variation gives the field visual depth.
