Rugsville Vintage Patchwork Overdyed Aqua Wool Carpet 5' x 8'

Aqua sits at the boundary between blue and green, and it is one of the harder colours to land in textile. Too cool and it reads as institutional; too warm and it reads as decorative. A vintage overdye in aqua works because the underlying wool already carries traces of older browns, ivories, and reds, and the cool aqua bath sits over that warm complexity rather than starting from a clean white. The result is an aqua with depth and shifting undertone, more like seawater under varying skies than like a paint chip.

The rug was assembled in India over four to five months by two workers. Around thirty hand-knotted wool patches, cut from previously woven carpets, were matched by pile and density and stitched along reinforced seams. The reassembled rug was washed in mild chemical reduction to soften the original colours, then submerged in a full-immersion aqua dye vat. The patch boundaries remain visible as faint stitched lines, and the original drawings survive as paler ghost outlines under the unified aqua field.

The composition

A field of aqua that reads as paler turquoise where the patches were originally lighter and as deeper teal where the originals were darker. The shifting tonal value across the rug is the signature of overdyeing on uneven source material. Original floral and geometric drawings survive as faint ghost outlines under the colour. The seam lines form a soft grid across the field. The rug presents as a single considered colour object at distance, and as a layered textile collage on close inspection.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Check seams every six months and re-stitch any looseness early. Rotate end for end twice a year for even light wear. Blot any spill with cotton, working inward from the edge. Hand wash through a wool-trained conservator every four to five years to restore pile and dye depth.
