Two weavers worked this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) loom in India for around four months. The fibre is hand-spun wool worked over cotton warp and weft. The original palette of browns, rusts, and ivory was knotted at a traditional density. After weaving the rug was washed in an antique bath that softened the saturations into a unified beige reading; the rug was then sheared close to reveal the tonal life beneath the surface.

The composition

A soft beige field with the underlying floral pattern visible as gentle tonal variation rather than as crisp drawing. The antique wash has unified the original colours into a single warm palette; the eye reads texture and tone rather than figure. Over the first decade the beige will warm slightly toward a deeper bone, and the underlying drawing will stay at the same softened reading.
