Floral repeats in red on a Persian-influenced carpet trace back to the Sultanabad workshops of the nineteenth century, where the master dyers had figured out how to push madder root to the depth and stability that other workshops could not match. The Orly draw belongs to that tradition, with a distributed floral field rather than a centred medallion, the pattern designed to be read from anywhere in the room rather than from a single sightline.

Three weavers in India spent close to seven months on the loom. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft. The red passages were built up across two madder baths, alum-mordanted, and air-cured for a week between dyeing and washing so the colour penetrated the fibre rather than coating it. The walnut and indigo accents were dyed in copper vats, each colour matured for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A red field carries floral tracery in cream, walnut, and faint indigo, distributed evenly across the surface so no centre claims the eye. The drawing has the loose, hand-rendered quality of vegetable-dyed wool, with each motif slightly different from its neighbour rather than mechanically repeated. The red will deepen by half a tone over the first decade and the cream will warm into bone, the carpet settling into a richer overall key as it ages.

What you are buying

Antique Sultanabad-style carpets in 8' x 10' format with vegetable dye and condition grading clear thirty to sixty thousand US dollars at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Rippon Boswell when they come to market. This is a new weaving on the same loom and the same draw, in hand-spun wool dyed by the same vegetable processes, made in India. The Western dealer multiplier on equivalent new goods is three to four. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. The carpet expects a full sectional sofa or a six-to-eight-seat dining table arranged above it, with the rug as the visual ground rather than as a layer beneath the furniture. The red palette pairs with walnut, oak, brass, and natural leather, and holds against walls in chalk, stone, sage, or deep blue. Warm rooms gain depth; cool rooms gain heat.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light wear evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub a vegetable-dyed wool. A trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years. With this care, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?
