The Royal Mahal draw sits in the same lineage as the Sultanabad and Ziegler workshops, but with a more architectural geometry. Mahal-pattern carpets carry their floral repeats inside a more disciplined framework than the looser Ziegler compositions, with the field motifs aligned to a grid even when the surface drawing reads organic. The result is a carpet that looks classical from a distance and reveals an underlying order on closer inspection.
Two to three weavers shared the loom in India for close to five months. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft. Vegetable dye was prepared from madder, walnut hull, indigo, and oak gall in copper vats, each colour matured for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The wool was sun-cured for a week between the dye bath and the wash so the colour penetrated rather than coating the fibre.
The composition
A muted ground holds floral and palmette repeats drawn loose enough to feel hand-rendered. The colour values sit within a narrow tonal range, the carpet reading as a single warm plane with deeper accents picked out at the field motifs and the border. Vegetable-dyed wool of this kind continues to mature for the first decade after weaving, the lighter passages warming and the deeper passages settling into their full saturation. The carpet acquires patina rather than fading.
What you are buying
Antique Mahal-pattern carpets in 6' x 9' with vegetable dye and condition grading clear twenty-five to forty thousand US dollars at Sotheby's and Christie's when they appear. This is a new weaving on the same loom and the same draw, in hand-spun wool dyed by the same processes, made in India. The Western dealer markup on equivalent new goods is three to four. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the dye work continues to develop after purchase.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom, a generous study, or a small living arrangement built around a two-seater sofa and a pair of armchairs. The muted palette accepts almost any architectural shell, from chalk-washed plaster to charcoal-painted joinery. Pairs with oak, walnut, brass, and natural leather. The disciplined geometry holds against patterned upholstery without competing.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five to seven years. With this care, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and the dye work continues to develop through that period.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
