Mahal carpets emerged in late nineteenth-century Persia as a more openly drawn, less courtly cousin of the Sultanabad. Where the Sultanabad used a central medallion and a layered border, the Mahal opened the field, dropped the medallion, and ran the floral repeat as a continuous all-over pattern. The result was a carpet that worked as well in a country house as in a city drawing room. The pattern in this rug is drawn in that Mahal idiom and rendered in vegetable dye on hand-spun wool.
Two weavers worked the vertical loom in India for around six months. Roughly 2.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp. The vegetable dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut, and pomegranate rind, each bath matured in copper before the wool was lowered. Hand-spun New Zealand wool was chosen specifically for its ability to take vegetable dye to depth without losing the slight irregularity that gives plant-dyed carpets their patina. After cutting, the carpet was washed three times in cold water and sun-dried.
The composition
A warm rust ground carries floral and vine work in indigo, ivory, and faded rose. The all-over Mahal repeat runs corner to corner without a central medallion. The border holds two simple guard bands rather than the layered borders of the classical Persian school. The colour will not stay where it began. Over the next decade the rust will lighten, the indigo will deepen, and the ivory will warm into bone. A vegetable-dyed carpet does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to start changing.
What you are buying
Antique Mahal carpets in vegetable dye at this scale trade at Western auction in the range of $15,000 to $40,000. This is a new weaving in the same idiom, in the same fibre, in the same dye, on the same kind of loom. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the way a vegetable-dyed Sultanabad or Mahal has always done. The retail mathematics here is the cost of cutting out the international dealer layers, not the cost of cutting any corner in the workshop.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a sofa and two flanking armchairs in a living room, or sits under a six-seat dining table with the chairs comfortably on the pile. The rust and indigo palette reads warmest against cream, dusty rose, or pale terracotta walls. Walnut and rosewood furniture sit naturally above this carpet. Direct sunlight is welcome rather than feared. UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.
Conservation
Rotate every six months so light and footfall wear the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill within thirty minutes using cold water and a clean cotton cloth. A professional wool wash by a trained conservator every five years preserves the vegetable dye depth. With this care the carpet stays in service well past the first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
