Classical Persian carpet styles share a vocabulary that has been refined over five centuries. Palmette, vine, rosette, guard band, abrash. What changes between weavings is the proportion in which those elements meet, the saturation of the dye, and the breath the weaver leaves between motifs. This rug works inside that vocabulary as a Sultanabad-Ziegler hybrid, with the open field of the former and the disciplined palette of the latter.

Four weavers shared the vertical loom for nearly six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool laid on a cotton foundation, tied in Persian asymmetric knots one row at a time. Madder root for warm rust, indigo for the deeper accent, walnut hull for tan, oak gall for the outline tones, and pomegranate rind for the lighter cream were each matured in copper for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The clipped pile was sun-dried and given a long mineral wash that pulled the saturation back two stops into antique register.

The composition

An open ground in a soft cream-warm beige carrying palmette and vine in measured intervals. The accents are madder rust and a deep indigo that reads as charcoal in shadow. There is no central medallion. The eye moves across the field and finds incident at every scale. Over the next decade the colours will mature into one another, the slow chord that vegetable dye produces and synthetic dye cannot manage.

What you are buying

Period Persian classical carpets at this scale and palette reach forty to eighty thousand US dollars at the major auction houses when they appear. This rug shares the loom architecture, the Persian knot, the long-staple wool, and the plant-dye discipline of those antiques. At one and a half lac it is priced against the cost of domestic upholstery, and unlike upholstery it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The all-over composition welcomes asymmetric furniture placement. The palette pairs with walnut, brass, vellum lampshades, oxblood leather, and a single large painting in saturated colour. North-light rooms read the indigo cooler. South-light rooms warm the rust toward terracotta.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with clean cotton at once, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator at the six-year mark. With this care the piece runs nine decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
