Vegetable dyeing is the slowest part of any classical wool carpet, and it is the part that decides whether a rug ages into a piece of art or fades into a tired textile. The classical palette carried in this rug, built on madder root, fermented indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, was the working vocabulary of Persian and Indian weavers for four hundred years before synthetic alizarin and aniline blue replaced it in the late nineteenth century. The colour comes back here in its proper form, prepared in copper vats matured over weeks rather than minutes.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. Around 1.7 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel, the wool drawn from a long-staple New Zealand fleece chosen because it lifts plant dye to the saturation the classical palette demands without losing the small irregularities that read as patina rather than as flaw.

The composition

An open soft-ivory field carries a measured all-over vine in madder, indigo, and faded ochre. The centre thickens slightly without resolving into a hard medallion, which is the discipline that separates the classical drawing from later commercial revivals. The colour will keep moving for a decade. The ivory warms toward bone, the madder lightens, and the indigo deepens. The rug arrives ready to begin its life rather than at the end of someone else's.

What you are buying

Classical vegetable-dyed carpets in this scale and density trade at Western dealer auctions between twenty-five and fifty thousand dollars when honest examples surface. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same loom geometry, in the same fibre and dye process. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is true of nothing else you set on a floor.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits naturally beneath the front edge of a sectional or under a six-to-eight seater dining table. The classical palette pairs with walnut, oak, oxidised brass, and unbleached linen. Mid-tone walls let the saturation read, and a south-facing window helps refresh the dyes that interior light steadily flattens.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and water, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With that care, the piece runs ninety years on a domestic floor.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
