By the late nineteenth century, the workshops at Sultanabad in western Iran had quietly redrawn the rules of the drawing-room carpet. A Swiss buying office had pushed local masters to thin out the dense palmette repeats of classical Persia and let the field breathe. The Classic Styles Sultanabad in front of you carries that lineage forward, woven for collectors who want a vegetable-dyed wool floor that was alive before they bought it and will keep moving for the next eighty years.

Two to three weavers shared the loom in India for around four months. Roughly one and a half million Persian-asymmetric knots, every one tied by feel against a vertical beam. The pile is New Zealand wool, chosen because it accepts madder, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall to the depth this palette requires.

The composition

An open ivory ground holds vine work in soft rust and faded indigo. The drawing is loose enough to let the wool show through, tight enough to read as a coherent field at six feet by nine. Vegetable colour is never quite stable. Over a decade, the rust will warm toward terracotta, the indigo will darken at the edges, and the ivory will move to bone.

What you are buying

Pre-1920 Sultanabads in equivalent condition appear at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell in the range of twenty to forty thousand US dollars when they surface at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few objects you place underfoot hold that property at any price.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the classic seating-area scale. The carpet sits comfortably under a three-piece sofa arrangement or a six-seat dining set, with the palette throwing warmth back into mid-tone walls and oak floors. Cream linen, walnut, brass, and unframed canvas all read well above it.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth rather than rubbing. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this regimen the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
