Vegetable dye is the older of the two ways to colour a wool carpet, and the harder. Synthetic dye holds steady through the bath, takes thirty minutes to set, and produces the same shade in lot after lot. A botanical dye is alive at every stage. Madder root, indigo leaf, oak gall, and walnut hull are gathered, ground, soaked for days, fermented in copper vats, and then opened to the wool a single dip at a time. The colour the rug carries is the colour the dye master could persuade out of that particular harvest.

This 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) classic Sultanabad was tied by three to four weavers over roughly seven months. The pile is New Zealand wool, hand-spun for an even but slightly irregular yarn that takes plant dye well. The foundation is cotton, warped vertically and tensioned by hand. Each knot was set by feel against the beam and combed down before the next row began. Pile height runs eight to twelve millimetres, sufficient depth to carry the colour shifts vegetable dye produces without losing the crispness of the drawing.

The composition

An open ivory and soft cream ground carries an all-over floral repeat in faded brick rust, deep indigo, and old gold. The pattern is a continuous field rather than a centred medallion, which lets the eye land anywhere on the rug. The border is restrained, a single broad indigo guard band rather than the layered borders that mark commercial work. The colour is not stable. It will deepen, lift, and shift across the next decade.

What you are buying

Comparable vegetable-dyed Sultanabad pieces with workshop attribution and clean condition sell through the major Western houses and the established dealer market in the range of three to seven lakh. The MSRP on this rug reflects that comparable. The price asked is well below it because Rugsville works direct with the loom. Hand-knotted vegetable-dyed wool on cotton is one of the few floor objects that genuinely appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a generous formal drawing room or a long dining setting. The cream-and-indigo palette pairs with walnut, oak, brass, restrained period furniture, and either oil painting or modern abstract work. Mid-tone walls hold the colour best. Direct sunlight is welcome; UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light age the piece evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a wool hand-wash by a trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and develops the soft patina older Sultanabads are valued for.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
