Vegetable dyeing is the older and more demanding of the two ways to colour wool. Madder roots are crushed and matured in copper vats for weeks before the wool is lowered. Indigo is fermented in alkaline pits and oxidises only when the yarn is lifted into the air. Walnut hull, oak gall, pomegranate skin, and weld each ask their own preparation. The result is a yarn that does not match itself perfectly batch to batch, and that irregularity is precisely the point.
Three weavers shared the loom for around six months. Hand-spun wool, knotted against a vertical cotton warp in the classical floral pattern that travelled from Persia into the workshops of north India and stayed there. Total knot count works out to roughly two and a half million for the field, every one tied by feel.
The composition
A field of soft beige with floral repeats in muted green, terracotta, and deep madder rose. The border carries the same palette in a tighter rhythm. Because every yarn took dye slightly differently, the field carries a quiet variation across the surface that printed copies cannot reproduce. The rug ages forward. Over the next decade the madder will lighten, the indigo-greens will deepen, and the beige will warm into bone.
What you are buying
Antique vegetable-dyed floral carpets of this scale, in restored condition, sell through Western dealers between fifteen and forty thousand dollars depending on age and provenance. This is a contemporary weaving on a classical loom, in the same fibre and the same dye method. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other floor object with that property at this price.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical living-room scale. The rug expects a full sofa and chairs arrangement, or a long dining setting, with all furniture sitting on top of the pile rather than floating beside it. Walls in chalk, pale clay, or warm grey hold the palette in balance. Indirect daylight reveals the dye work; downlights flatten it.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Have the rug hand washed by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way the rug will outlast eighty years of normal use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
