Turquoise as a textile colour came down a long road. The pigment first appears in glazed brick on the gates of ancient Persia, then on the tiled domes of Timurid mosques, and finally in the dye baths of nineteenth century Caucasian and Anatolian weavers who learned to balance copper sulphate against indigo to hold a clean blue-green that would not dull in lamplight. An overdyed turquoise carpet picks up that lineage and carries it through the late-twentieth-century studio idea of taking a finished traditional rug and submerging it whole in a single hand-prepared bath of pigment.
This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers over five to six months. The base is New Zealand wool on a cotton warp and weft, sheared close after weaving, washed to relax the surface lustre, and then lowered into a copper-tinted indigo bath where the dye took differently to wool that had aged in slightly different conditions. That irregularity is the point. The colour reads as a single turquoise from across a room and as a watercolour study of a turquoise from arm's length.
The composition
Ground colour is a warm, slightly green-shifted turquoise. Older floral and medallion motifs sit beneath the wash like a watermark in handmade paper, more visible at oblique angles, almost lost when looked at straight on. The blue will continue to age. Sunlight will deepen the green tint, traffic will burnish the high points of the pile, and the piece will move through ten or fifteen tonal stages over its working life.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted overdyed wool of this calibre is sold in European and American galleries at three to five lakh rupees once it crosses borders. The fibre, the foundation, and the immersion process are identical to that supply chain. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which puts it in a different financial category from any other floor covering.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a sitting area without dictating it. The turquoise wants warm neutrals around it: aged brass, walnut, raw linen, lime-washed terracotta. Pale stone floors push the blue forward; dark hardwood lets it settle into the architecture. Pairs especially well with a single piece of mid-century walnut furniture and otherwise minimal upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year, vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar lifted, blot rather than scrub when something spills. A specialist hand-wash every five years preserves the dye depth. The wool fibre and the bath dye are both forgiving of conservative care, and the piece is built to outlast a generation of normal use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
