Rugsville Turquoise Overdyed Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

Overdyeing is a finishing process with a long history, used by Anatolian merchants in the early twentieth century to refresh worn carpets by lowering them into a single-colour bath. The wool absorbs the dye unevenly, which is exactly the point. The original drawing reads through softly, as if seen behind glass. Contemporary overdyeing in turquoise applied to a fresh weaving uses the same principle to produce a carpet that reads as a colour field with a quiet ghost of pattern beneath.

Four weavers shared the loom for around six months to produce this 9' x 12' piece. The base carpet was hand-knotted in India in hand-spun wool to a traditional floral cartoon, then sheared close, washed, and lowered into a turquoise bath prepared from a copper-stable acid dye specific to wool fibre. The bath was monitored continuously to keep the colour uneven in a controlled way, which is the difference between an overdyed carpet that holds the eye and one that reads as a flat slab.

The composition

A single saturated turquoise field with the original floral drawing showing through in faint shifts of value. The colour reads cool blue at one angle and warm green at another, because the wool was dyed across two baths rather than dipped once. The border survives as a softer outline. Over years the turquoise will deepen by a half tone and the ghost drawing will surface a little more clearly as the surface lanolin migrates.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, since saturated colour fields show stains more clearly than tonal drawings. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years; never machine wash an overdyed wool piece. With that schedule the rug runs forty to sixty years.
