Tribal carpets predate the workshops. Long before the Sultanabad commission rooms or the Manchester buying offices, families in the highland pastures wove rugs on horizontal looms pegged to the ground, drawing geometric motifs from memory rather than from paper. The Caucasian and west Persian tribes used green and red as their principal colour pair because madder root and indigo were the two most reliable dye plants in their region, and a yellow over-dye on the indigo gave the green. This rug carries that tribal vocabulary into a finely woven contemporary 9 x 12.

Three to four weavers worked the vertical loom for around six months. The pile is hand-spun wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. Madder root for the red, indigo over yellow weld for the green, walnut hull for the brown, and oak gall for the deeper outline tones were each matured in copper vessels for two weeks before the wool was lowered. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash that mellowed the saturation toward antique register.

The composition

A field worked in stepped lozenges and small stylised animals, drawn freehand. The dominant values are a deep madder red ground and a forest-green field within stepped medallions. Cream, walnut, and a touch of indigo fill the negative spaces. The border is a triple band of running rosette and stylised hook motifs in the same palette. The geometry breathes; the lines do not rule. That is the trace of weavers working from memory rather than from a cartoon.

What you are buying

Antique tribal carpets at this scale and condition reach twenty to fifty thousand US dollars at international auction when they appear. This rug is woven on the same loom architecture, in the same fibre, with the same plant-dye discipline. At one and a half lac it sits at a fraction of the auction comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary living area or a long dining room. The bold red and green hold their own against panelled wood, brick, or chalk plaster. Pairs with walnut casework, brass detail, leather, and a single large saturated work above the sofa.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece runs nine decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
