Tribal weaving carries a different intelligence from the city workshop. Where the urban Persian tradition perfected the curve, the tribal repertoire perfected the angle, the bold field, and the symbolic motif. Hexagonal medallions, hooked diamonds, animal totems, and stepped borders entered the repertoire from groups moving across the high plateau between Persia and Anatolia. The pattern in front of you draws from that vocabulary, scaled and sweetened for a contemporary room.
The carpet was woven in India over five and a half months by a team of three weavers on a vertical loom. Hand-spun wool over a cotton warp and weft, knotted row by row by feel rather than from a printed chart. The dyestuffs were prepared from madder, indigo, weld, and walnut hull, with the green built by over-dyeing yellow weld with light indigo to produce a colour that ages true rather than turning blue or yellow as one of its components fades.
The composition
A deep green field carries hooked diamonds and stepped medallions in madder red, framed by a stepped border in ivory and indigo. Tribal palettes hold their character because the colours are pushed to saturation rather than balanced toward neutrality. The red sings against the green precisely because the greens sit in the cooler half of the spectrum and the reds sit in the warmer half, with no muddy mid-tone between them. Saturation deepens with age.
What you are buying
Antique tribal carpets of this scale and palette in clean condition trade at European auction in the $12,000 to $25,000 range. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom, in the same dye tradition. The price reflects the labour, not a markup over machine product. Hand-knotted carpets gain value with use rather than losing it.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is room-anchoring rather than accent scale. The green and red palette holds together against warm wood floors, terracotta walls, and leather upholstery. Pairs strongly with vintage Indian carved furniture and with mid-century low-slung modern. Avoid placing under glass coffee tables, which kill the colour interaction by reflecting overhead light onto the field.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the pile wears evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a dry cotton cloth, working inward. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years to keep the cotton foundation supple and the dye true. With this care the rug runs eighty years and gains patina along the way.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
