The dhurrie is the Indian flatweave equivalent of the kilim, traditionally woven on horizontal pit looms in cotton and wool. The structure is graphic by definition, the design held by the weave rather than printed onto it. A flatweave is a textile in the strict sense. The pattern is the structure, not a layer applied on top of it. That is why this kind of rug remains contemporary in any room, regardless of how often the surrounding furniture changes around it. The form has been refined for centuries and shows no sign of dating.
3 weeks at a horizontal pit loom under a single weaver. The grey pattern is held by the weft itself, with no pile and no knot. Cotton warp, dyed jute weft, hand-twisted fringe at both ends.
The composition
The grey pattern is built up row by row from coloured weft. There is no pile to crush, no knot to wear, only the weave itself. The flat profile means both faces are usable, although the front carries the cleaner finish. Slit-weave joins separate adjacent colour blocks, leaving a small open seam where two fields meet. That detail is the signature of the flatweave tradition and the reason the structure is so durable. The seams settle and tighten with use.
The piece in a room
4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) works under a hallway, a smaller bedroom, or a defined seating nook. The flat profile slides under low furniture without bunching. The drawing pairs cleanly with mid-tone walls in clay, putty, or oat. Architecture in stone or wood lets the rug carry the colour. Layer the flatweave over a larger sisal or jute base in colder months for added warmth without hiding the drawing. The combination reads as a deliberate two-layer composition rather than as a stack.
Care
Use suction-only vacuuming. The flat structure can be lifted and aired in dry weather. Blot any spill on contact, never rub. Have the piece professionally cleaned every three years to keep the weft tight. The rug rolls compactly for storage or seasonal swap.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
