Two carpets in the same red and ivory Kazak grammar are never the same carpet, because the village tradition treats the cartoon as a guide rather than as a reproduction template. Weavers carry the medallion proportions, the border bands, and the colour sequence in memory and improvise the smaller filler motifs as the loom progresses. This 10' x 14' piece reads as a sister to the related red and ivory Kazak in the collection but resolves its own way through the small ornament across the field.

Four weavers worked this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) loom over roughly seven months. The wool is highland-grade and hand-spun, with the slight thick-and-thin variation that the symmetric Turkish knot rewards and the smooth mill yarn flattens. Dyes came from madder root for the red ground, indigo for the secondary blues, and walnut hull for the darker browns; ivory passages are undyed wool washed in cold river water before knotting. The carpet was knotted in India in the Caucasian village idiom that workshops on this side of the Himalaya have carried for two generations.

The composition

A red field anchors stepped medallions in ivory, indigo, and walnut brown, with the small filler motifs and minor borders varying from the related piece in the collection. The drawing is angular and tribal; the interest is in the texture of small differences from one woven inch to the next. With time the red will mature toward terracotta and the indigos will deepen, while the undyed ivory will warm into bone.

What you are buying

Authentic Caucasian Kazak carpets of comparable scale and drawing trade at international auction between $9,000 and $20,000 when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same idiom, on the same loom type, in the same hand-spun wool, with the same vegetable dye sequence and the same symmetric knot. The carpet appreciates with use as the colour matures, and the village structure is among the most durable in the wider Asian rug tradition.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) anchors a generous living area, a formal dining room, or a library with a reading group. The red and ivory palette is at its best with walnut, oak, oxblood leather, and unlacquered brass; it suits both classical and mid-century furniture and is unexpectedly good company for contemporary pieces in plywood or bent steel. Pair with calm walls so the geometry of the carpet has the visual room to breathe.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years. Cared for this way, the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives the room it was first bought for.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
