Red and ivory is the founding colour pairing of the Caucasian carpet tradition, used in village weaving from the early nineteenth century onward as a way of giving the dyed ground its full saturation while keeping a cool counterpoint in the geometry above it. The pairing reads with confidence at any scale because the red field absorbs incident light and the ivory pulls it back out at the borders. This 10' x 14' carpet works that pairing at a generous scale.

Four weavers shared the loom over roughly seven months to bring this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) piece off the beam. The wool is highland-grade, hand-spun for the slight thick-and-thin texture the symmetric Turkish knot rewards. The red ground was dyed in copper vessels with madder root over two batches to give the field its tonal depth, while the ivory passages are undyed wool washed in cold river water and aired before knotting. Walnut hull and oak gall handled the smaller dark accents. The carpet was knotted in India in the Kazak village idiom.

The composition

A red field carries linked stepped medallions in ivory, indigo, and walnut brown, framed by a multi-band border that answers the field rather than competing with it. The drawing is angular and confident; this is village pattern rather than court pattern. With age the red will warm into terracotta and the indigos will deepen, while the ivory will settle into bone, which is the maturation collectors of vegetable-dyed Caucasian work look for.

What you are buying

Antique Caucasian Kazaks of this scale, drawing, and condition trade at the European auction houses between $9,000 and $20,000 when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same village idiom, on the same loom type, in the same hand-spun wool, with the same vegetable dyes and the same symmetric knot. A Kazak of this build appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the structure is generational.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is a drawing room or formal dining scale, generous enough for a full sectional and two armchairs without crowding the borders. The red and ivory palette suits a study, a library, or a primary living area arranged around walnut, oak, oxblood leather, and unlacquered brass. The angular geometry pairs with both classical and mid-century furniture and tolerates more mixing than a curvilinear medallion carpet would.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and sunlight age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar off. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cotton cloth; the ivory passages are what make early intervention worth doing. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. The piece is built to run eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
