The flatweave structure is the form's signature. The flatweave is the most versatile rug form in the household. Light enough to move, durable enough to take traffic, and visually disciplined enough to suit contemporary architecture without needing the depth of pile. The trade-off is the absence of softness underfoot, which is the deliberate aesthetic of the form.

3 weeks at a horizontal pit loom under a single weaver. The neutral pattern is held by the weft itself, with no pile and no knot. Cotton warp, dyed jute weft, hand-twisted fringe at both ends.

The composition

Neutral weft worked across a hidden warp. The flat structure makes the rug fully reversible and gives it the kind of disciplined surface that suits contemporary architecture. The flat profile means both faces are usable, although the front carries the cleaner finish. The jute weft was hand-dyed in batches before weaving, which is why the neutral reads with depth rather than as a uniform print. The colour variation between batches is part of the visual signature of the form.

The piece in a room

5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) works under a primary bedroom, a flat-scale living area, or a dining setting for four to six. The flat profile slides under low furniture without bunching. The drawing pairs cleanly with mid-tone walls in clay, putty, or oat. Architecture in stone or wood lets the rug carry the colour. A thin felted underlay keeps the flatweave from slipping on a polished floor and protects the underside from grit. The rug can be lifted and aired in dry weather without specialist handling.

Care

Weekly vacuuming on suction only, no beater bar. Blot any spill with cool water and a clean cloth. The rug can be rolled and shaken out of doors when needed. Professional cleaning every three to four years. The weft tightens with light use and the rug grows more comfortable over time.
