Complete your setup
Hand-spun wool is the only fibre that takes vegetable dye to the saturation a tribal palette needs without losing the slight irregularity that gives the surface its life. Mill-spun yarn is too uniform; the colour sits flat on it. The wool in front of you was carded and spun by hand in small batches, which is why the gold reads as old brass and the burgundy reads as cured wine rather than as flat printed colour.
The carpet was woven in India over roughly five and a half months by three weavers sharing a vertical loom. Knot by knot in the Persian asymmetric knot over a cotton warp and weft, the cartoon hung at eye height beside the work. The dyestuffs were prepared from madder root, indigo, weld, walnut hull, and pomegranate skin in copper vats, matured for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The burgundy is built by over-dyeing madder with a touch of indigo, the way a glaze deepens an undercoat.
The composition
A burgundy field carries hooked diamonds and stepped medallions in old gold and antique ivory, framed by a layered border of stepped guards. The geometry is bold and graphic at room scale; from a chair the eye picks up smaller incidents inside each diamond. Saturation deepens with age because vegetable colour matures in light rather than fading from it. The burgundy will mellow toward a softer aged red and the gold will gain warmth.
What you are buying
Antique tribal carpets of this scale and palette move through European auction in the $14,000 to $28,000 band when they appear in clean condition. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving in the same fibre, the same knot, the same dye tradition. Hand-knotted carpets gain value with age rather than losing it; the price now reflects the labour invested rather than scarcity, and the rug appreciates from this point forward.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is room-anchoring scale rather than accent. Burgundy and gold pairs with warm wood floors, with leather upholstery, and with terracotta or ochre walls. The geometry holds against carved Indian furniture and against mid-century low-slung modern with equal ease. Avoid cool grey palettes around it, which kill the warmth.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and daylight age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside in. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five to seven years. Maintained this way, the carpet runs eighty years and acquires patina rather than wear.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
