The Beni Ourain tradition comes out of the Atlas mountains of Morocco, where the Beni Ourain confederation of Berber tribes has been weaving heavy ivory wool rugs for the cold high-altitude winters for more than a thousand years. The classical Beni piece is a thick undyed cream field with a sparse irregular diamond lattice in deep brown or black, drawn loosely by hand without a cartoon. The drawing is talismanic rather than decorative, the diamond reading as a fertility and protection symbol in the original tribal vocabulary.
This 8' x 11' (244 x 335 cm) carpet was woven in India in the Beni Ourain tradition by three weavers over approximately six months. The pile is hand-spun undyed wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at a low-to-medium density and finished long, in the heavy-pile manner of the original Atlas rugs. The diamond lattice was drawn in deep walnut-dyed wool free-hand, in keeping with the tribal practice of working without a fixed cartoon. The carpet was washed and sun-cured for several weeks before final shearing.
The composition
An ivory cream wool field, slightly variegated by the natural variation of undyed fleece, laid with a sparse irregular diamond lattice in deep walnut brown. Each diamond is drawn slightly differently from the next, in keeping with the freehand tradition. The pile is long enough to give the surface a tactile sculpture rather than a flat drawing. The whole has the spare graphic confidence of the original Atlas pieces and the modern interior reading the tradition has acquired since the 1950s.
What you are buying
Antique Beni Ourain pieces in this scale sell at Western interior dealers and at boutique auctions between four and twelve thousand pounds, with the better-known mid-twentieth-century pieces fetching considerably more. This contemporary version is woven in India in the same tradition, with the same fibre, the same low loom, and the same freehand drawing discipline. The carpet appreciates with use as the wool develops the characteristic creamy patina the tradition is known for.
The piece in a room
Eight by eleven Beni Ourain belongs in a primary bedroom under the foot of a king bed, in a long primary living area beneath a deep sectional, or in a serious study where its talismanic geometry sets a quiet tone. Pairs beautifully with raw timber floors, white plaster walls, leather, brass, and undyed linen. Reads particularly well in spaces with mid-century Scandinavian furniture, where the Berber simplicity meets the modernist discipline.
Conservation
The long undyed pile rewards gentle handling. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar fully off and the suction set to medium. Shake out lightly outdoors twice a year if practicable. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth from the outside in; avoid water on the cream field where possible. Schedule a wool conservator wash every five to seven years. With this care the carpet ages forward, gaining the cream-and-walnut patina the tradition values.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
