New Zealand wool is the only commercial fibre that takes vegetable dye to the depths a transitional composition needs without losing the slight irregularity of grain. The wool here was sourced for that reason and prepared in the traditional way. Each batch of yarn was hand-spun, washed, and dyed before any knot was tied, which is a measurable share of the total making time.

Two weavers shared the loom for four to five months. Around 415,000 hand-tied knots in wool, every one tied by feel and beaten down before the next row begins. The pile is wool, chosen for its capacity to take dye in depth and to wear into a softer surface rather than a flatter one. The dyes were prepared in the traditional way and matured before the wool was lowered into the bath.

The composition

A green ground holds the rug. The transitional drawing sits inside it without forcing contrast, so the geometry registers as part of the field rather than printed on top. The colour will warm slightly with use, the way wool always does, and the pattern will read more clearly as the surface settles. Sunlight falling across the rug brings out the secondary tones, and evening lamp light pushes the warmer values forward.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted wool carpets in this density and palette move through Western dealers and auction houses at three to five times this price when they appear at all. The rug is being offered at the workshop figure rather than the gallery margin. A hand-knotted wool carpet in green appreciates with use rather than depreciating; few floor objects share that property at any price. The price difference is direct sourcing, not a quality difference; the loom and the wool and the dye are the same.

The piece in a room

At 4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug sits in a primary bedroom under a queen bed with twelve to eighteen inches showing on either side, in a medium living room under the front legs of a sofa, or in a study laid full under desk and chair. The green register pairs with walnut, oak, and warm metals. The transitional drawing reads cleanly from any of those orientations because the composition was scaled to live at this format rather than scaled down from a larger original.

Conservation

Daily life is light on a hand-knotted wool carpet. Suction vacuum weekly, rotate every six months, blot spills immediately with cool water and a cotton cloth. Schedule a conservator hand-wash every five years. Under that care the rug lasts a century and gains depth as it does so. Avoid rubber-backed pads and chemical spot treatments; both attack the wool and the natural dyes.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
