Transitional weaving emerged in the late 1990s as a deliberate bridge between the densely patterned Persian and Mughal traditions and the open, low-incident geometry of contemporary interiors. The motifs are simplified, the borders thinned or removed, the palette pulled toward neutrals so the rug functions as a calm ground rather than a focal pattern. This piece sits firmly inside that lineage, drawing the structure of a classical medallion design and resolving it in soft cream, taupe, and pearl with silk-touched highlights that catch directional light.
Three weavers worked the loom for roughly six months. The composition mixes wool pile with silk highlights along the medallion outline and the corner motifs; silk holds dye at higher saturation than wool and reads as a brighter line under raking light. The wool is hand-spun and vegetable-dyed in a careful sequence of weld, oak gall, and walnut hull baths to hold the palette inside the warm-neutral range.
The composition
A faintly drawn central medallion sits on a continuous neutral ground. Cream, ivory, pearl, and the palest taupe move into one another with no hard boundaries. Silk highlights trace the medallion edge and the corner spandrels, picking up light at a different sheen than the wool. The whole composition behaves as a tonal painting rather than as a graphic statement.
What you are buying
Comparable wool-and-silk transitional pieces at this density and size list with Western dealers between $9,000 and $14,000. The mixed-fibre construction is technically demanding because wool and silk shrink at different rates; the loom tension has to be managed across the full six months. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the silk gains a deeper sheen as the surface fibres compact.
The piece in a room
8' x 11' (244 x 335 cm) anchors a primary living room or a dining set under a six-to-eight seat table. The neutral palette pairs with bone walls, raw linen upholstery, oak floors, and a single piece of strong art in saturated colour above the seating. The rug is the calm; the rest of the room can carry the palette.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no beater bar; the silk highlights are sensitive to mechanical brushing. Blot spills immediately with white cotton, never rub. Conservator wash every four to five years given the silk content. The neutral ground shows tannin staining (tea, coffee, red wine) more readily than darker fields, so address spills inside the first hour.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
