Three weavers shared the upright loom for around six months. Hand-spun wool was tied alongside lustrous silk highlights, the silk catching light at a different refractive index and giving the surface its quiet shimmer. Knot density runs in the region of 200 per square inch on a cotton warp, with the pile finished short to bring the silk passages forward.

The composition

A field of soft grey carrying tonal floral repeats in deeper charcoal, ivory, and faint silver-blue silk. The silk lifts the design wherever it appears, catching light at a different angle to the surrounding wool and producing a subtle play across the surface as the eye moves. The grey is the dominant note. The silk is the punctuation. Over the first decade the wool will polish and the silk will settle by half a stop in saturation.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. The silk passages require slightly more careful handling than pure wool; avoid steam cleaning. A specialist wool-and-silk conservator should hand-wash the rug every four to five years.
