Rust on ivory is the colour set that the Sultanabad weavers of central Persia turned into an export language for the British and American drawing rooms of the 1890s. The ground is the colour of new wool washed in walnut, and the field carries the warm iron-oxide red that the local madder beds gave up after a long maturation in copper. The piece in front of you is woven inside that same tradition by a studio working from antique cartoons rather than commercial pattern books.

Three weavers shared the loom for about six months in India. The wool was hand-carded and spun in the same village it was washed and dyed. Around 2.6 million Persian asymmetric knots were tied through cotton warp, every one set by hand against a vertical beam. Dyes were prepared from madder root, walnut hull, and indigo in copper vats and matured for two weeks before the wool was lowered, the slow-set process that gives vegetable-dyed Sultanabad work its colour depth.

The composition

An ivory ground carries a wide all-over vine in rust, broken by occasional palmettes in muted indigo. There is no central medallion. The pattern repeats with the irregular grace of plant-based dye, the rust slightly different in each section depending on which bath the wool came from. The border is a single wide band of rust carrying paired ivory boteh. Over a decade the rust deepens into terracotta and the ivory warms into honey.

What you are buying

All-over Sultanabad-tradition carpets in vegetable-dyed wool at this scale move through European auction in the range of twenty to forty thousand US dollars when they appear with sound condition. The piece you are looking at is a new weaving on cotton foundation, in hand-spun wool, from natural dye baths. It functions as a working object on the floor and as an asset that holds its place on the secondary market for decades.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a formal living room. The all-over field reads best with furniture floated above it rather than pushed to the edges; you want the rust pattern visible around the seating. Pair with cream upholstery, walnut, brass, and stone. The palette warms a north-facing room and softens the hard light of a south-facing one.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Address spills with a dry cotton blot, never a sideways wipe. Plan a professional wash every five years with a conservator who works in vegetable-dyed pile. The rug runs eighty years cared for properly and develops a patina the loom alone cannot give it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
