Red and ivory is the palette that defined the European drawing room from about 1880 to the First World War. The Heriz workshops of north-west Persia produced thousands of carpets in this register for export through Tabriz, and the surviving examples are now the centre of gravity in every major sale of decorative oriental rugs. The composition here draws on that lineage, refined by a contemporary studio working from antique reference cartoons rather than commercial pattern books.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for around six months in India. The structure is a Persian-style asymmetric knot tied through cotton warp and weft, around 2.6 million knots in total. The wool is hand-carded and spun into a medium-weight yarn that takes the madder red to full saturation while keeping the ivory creamy rather than chalky. Dyes were prepared in copper from madder root, walnut hull, and indigo, then matured before the wool was lowered.
The composition
A central medallion in soft red sits on an ivory ground, framed by spandrels filled with curling vinework. The border is a single deep red band carrying classical herati turtles in cream and black. The interplay between the two principal colours is the work of the rug. Over a decade the red will mature into a warmer carmine and the ivory will warm into bone. The contrast deepens rather than dulls.
What you are buying
Late-Heriz carpets in red-and-ivory at this scale clear international rooms in the range of fifteen to thirty-five thousand US dollars when they appear with sound condition. This piece is a new weaving in the same tradition, on cotton foundation, in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool. It functions as both an object you walk on and an object that holds its place on the secondary market for the next half century.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working scale for a drawing room with a deep sectional or a dining table seating ten. The ivory field reads warmest against pale plaster or limewash walls. The red wakes brass, oxblood leather, and walnut without fighting them. Sunlight is the rug's friend, restoring saturation that interior light slowly thins.
Conservation
Turn the rug end for end every six months so wear distributes evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only. Treat spills immediately by blotting downward with cotton, never rubbing. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Stored properly the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives the room it was bought for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
