By the late nineteenth century, Persian court weavers had standardised a vocabulary of red-ground field carpets that travelled west on every steamer leaving the Gulf. Deep madder reds, ivory medallions, vine work knotted small enough to read as drawing rather than as repeated motif. The pattern in front of you sits in that lineage, knotted by a workshop in India that has spent two generations rebuilding the dye recipes after they were lost to the chemical era.
Four weavers worked the loom for roughly eight months. Each line was tied by hand from a paper cartoon hung above the warp, knot by knot, with a small steel hook. The pile is hand-spun wool from highland flocks, washed in cold river water before dyeing so the lanolin holds the colour long after the rug enters traffic. The reds are madder root, the ivory is undyed wool from white sheep, and the secondary indigos and ochres come from plant baths matured for two weeks before the skeins are lowered.
The composition
A central medallion in soft ivory holds the field together, surrounded by a sea of madder red broken by trailing vines and small palmettes. The borders run in three layers, the inner one ivory to echo the medallion, the outer two indigo and ochre to frame the red without competing with it. The colour will breathe with the room. Madder lightens slowly toward terracotta, ivory warms toward bone, and the indigos deepen as the wool oxidises in daylight.
What you are buying
Comparable nineteenth-century Persian carpets in 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) format with similar palette and condition trade at international auction in the range of forty to ninety thousand dollars when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of vertical loom, in hand-spun wool dyed by the same plant chemistry. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the price is set against contemporary cost rather than against the secondary market it will eventually enter.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the scale that holds a large drawing room or a long dining setting with chairs fully drawn back. The red carries warm-toned walls, walnut joinery, brass lighting, and leather upholstery without strain. Soft incandescent light deepens the field, daylight reveals the abrash and the small irregularities of hand-spun yarn.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn to even out wear from light and footfall. Vacuum gently each week with the beater bar disengaged, and never the fringe. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside in. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five to seven years, never a steam clean. Cared for this way, the carpet outlives a generation of furniture above it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
