Reversing the red and ivory ratio is what separates this drawing room piece from the more familiar ivory-led version of the same family. Here the red carries the field and the ivory works through the vine and floral motifs, which produces a rug that reads warmer at a distance and more graphic underfoot. The ratio comes out of the village looms of western Iran, where the choice of ground colour was a decision about how a carpet would behave in a low-lit interior.

Three to four weavers worked this loom in India for around six months. Cotton warps run vertical, hand-spun wool wefts run horizontal, and the asymmetric knots stack between them at a density that lets curvilinear motifs read cleanly. The wool was washed before spinning to remove dust and excess lanolin, then dyed in copper vats and hung to dry, which gives the colour the slight vertical striation of vegetable processing.

The composition

A red field crossed by ivory vine work and small floral medallions in walnut, indigo, and pale saffron. The red has the body that small-batch madder gives, neither crimson nor maroon, with a slight rose shift where the wool took dye lightly and a deeper brick where it took dye heavily. Borders mirror the field in reduced scale, the outer edge a slim guard band that contains the composition without competing with it.

What you are buying

A red-ground hand-knotted Indian wool carpet at 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is what every twentieth-century drawing room reached for when it could afford the space. Comparable contemporary work through Sotheby's mid-tier or American gallery channels prices around five to eight lakh. Rugsville sells loom-direct without a re-export markup, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carries a ten-seat dining table or a long sectional with margin to spare. The red ground reads warmest against off-white walls and cool stone floors; pair with brass or aged copper rather than chrome, and with hardwood furniture rather than lacquer. Direct sunlight is a friend over the long arc, restoring colour saturation that interior light slowly leaches.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so the field ages evenly across its length. Vacuum once a week with suction only and the beater bar lifted. Blot stains immediately with cool water and a soft cotton cloth, never scrub. Have the rug professionally hand-washed by a wool conservator every five years; this is the work that keeps a hand-knotted piece running eighty years rather than thirty.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
